The U.S. public education system is trying any number of techniques—from charter schools to presidential initiatives to oil-company-run teacher academies—to catch up to countries like Finland and South Korea in math and science education. But policymakers seem to be overlooking one simple solution: requiring math and science teachers to progress further up the educational ladder before they teach those subjects to kids.

All around the world, children are learning. They are learning all sorts of subjects and preparing for life and work in the world. Some children have access to excellent educational resources and possess all the tools they need for their early learning experiences. There are also students that do not have the access to a good education, and lack consistent teachers and infrastructure in their countries school system. Education varies all around the world, whether we realize it or not…

No, I think there was too rigid a pattern. You came out of an education and are supposed to know your vocation. Your vocation is fixed, and maybe ten years later you find you are not a teacher anymore or you’re not a painter anymore. It may happen. It has happened. I mean Gauguin decided at a certain point he wasn’t a banker anymore; he was a painter. And so he walked away from banking. I think we have a right to change course. But society is the one that keeps demanding that we fit in and not disturb things. They would like you to fit in right away so that things work now.”

- Anaïs Nin (via aninsufferableknowitall)

jtotheizzoe:

The words of Douglas Adams (of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy fame) narrate this story about the evolution of books from tablets of stone to tableaus on paper to tablet computers. Of course, being a very smart guy, Douglas Adams presciently predicted the rise of digital storytelling a more than a decade before the first real e-reader.

Here’s Adams’ 1993 story animated by UK illustrator Gavin Edwards.

This has been disproved over the years, as authors have developed conventions for communicating through the written word and educators have effectively taught students to extract that knowledge and make it their own. To prepare our students for the future, it’s time for another such transition in the way we educate. When we don’t teach students how to manage their online research effectively, we create a self-perpetuating cycle of poor-quality results. To break that cycle, educators can engage students in an ongoing conversation about how to carry out excellent research online. In the long term, students with stronger critical thinking skills will be more effective at school, and in their lives.”

- Building Good Search Skills: What Students Need to Know | MindShift (via infoneer-pulse)

world-shaker:
